Chulyoung Park is a classical guitarist, based in Tempe, Arizona, currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at Arizona State University. A native of South Korea, he began his musical journey in middle school teaching himself guitar and forming a band. His encounter with his first teacher, Chungjin Go, led him to the world of classical guitar. Park earned his Master of Music in classical guitar performance from Lee University, where he studied with Charlie Edholm. He currently serves as a teaching assistant at ASU, studying under Jiji and Dr. Martha Masters.
As a performer, Park has received several awards, including the grand prize in the adult division at the Korea Guitar Association International Guitar Competition and recognition as a winner of the Student Concerto Competition at Lee University. He was also a principal player of the Busan Festival Guitar Ensemble. He has participated in masterclasses with renowned artists such as Pablo Sáinz Villegas, Rene Izquierdo, Volterra Project, Gaëlle Solal, Marko Topchii, Su Meng, Jason Yoshida and Bokyung Byun.
Park is an active collaborator across a range of musical settings. He has performed Baroque guitar as a basso continuo with ASU Opera in L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi, and electric guitar with the ASU Wind Ensemble in Urban Light by James David. His arrangements for violin and guitar have been released on Soundcloud and YouTube. In 2026, he co-founded the guitar and harpsichord duo Dissonancio with Soyoung Lim, his wife and a keyboardist, focusing on expanding repertoire for this unique combination.
In addition to performance, Park is active as a conductor, composer, and lecturer. In 2026, he served as a guest conductor for the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) National School Summit in Las Vegas. He has also presented lectures at the New Mexico Guitar Festival and the GFA National School Summit. His composition Scavengers for guitar orchestra was premiered by ASU Guitar Orchestra in 2026.
As an educator, Park’s experience spans university teaching, private instruction, community ensembles, and certificate programs. During his time as a teaching assistant at Arizona State University, he has developed his curricula for college-level courses, conducted research, and served as a guest conductor for the ASU Guitar Orchestra. Beyond academia, he has worked as a guitar instructor at Music Maker Workshops in Phoenix, founded the Arizona Korea Guitar Ensemble, the first Korean guitar ensemble in Arizona, and established El Mar Guitar Academy in Busan, contributing to the local guitar community. He also supports his students’ professional development through certification programs such as ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).
